Many families are planning a vacation close to home this year. Why not get a family portrait done while you are there?
In tumultuous times, family is more important than ever. We are living through historic change. A family portrait taken during a pandemic will surely become a memorable family keepsake.
Where should you take the portrait?
With social distancing requirements you will want to do the shoot outdoors. If you know an area well, plan you portrait session to include spots you enjoy visiting with your family. For those who enjoy a hike, take a walk in the woods. If you want to keep close to home, take advantage of the garden. Ask your local photographer for tips to help select the best places.
When is the best time to schedule the session?
Your outdoor family portrait session will likely be shot under natural light conditions. A uniformly overcast sky can be ideal as this means no shadows on faces, and is a little cooler to operate in. You can also get beautiful shots in the early morning or late afternoon. Just avoid booking anything in the middle of the day as it will be both the hottest period and have the harshest and least flattering type of lighting.

Yes, you can get individual portraits done at the same time
It’s perfectly ok to ask for individual portraits at the same time as booking your family one. Once you’ve got the family taken care of, ask your photographer to capture a few individual portraits of yourselves and children. You may find that relaxed-on-vacation- you is a refreshing way to see yourself after spending a few months looking awkwardly at yourself on Zoom videos desperately wiping the sheen off your forehead.
Julian Haber Photography & Creative Services operates in and around Montreal which includes both the Eastern Townships and the Laurentians where many families have cottages or visit with friends who do. You can book sessions lasting as little as 30 minutes for a few set ups in one location, or a half or even full day for a variety of set ups and action shots out on the water, on hikes or any other outdoor activity you and your family enjoy together.
